Committee splits Walton School parcel and extends compact-residential area; amendment passes unanimously

Staff proposed changing part of the Walton School parcel from Mixed Use Neighborhood to Compact Residential to better align with abutting compact residential areas. Committee members raised concerns about the open-field and track area and about preserving recreational space if the school ever closes.
A motion to make the hatched portion compact residential was made and amended on the floor to include the back portion of the property (and a segment of the football field). The amendment was adopted and the amended motion passed unanimously. Members noted that if the school were ever declared surplus under state statute, the city would follow the required public process to determine future uses and could designate parts as public recreation in the overlay.
