Durham launches ERP RFP as aging SAP platform approaches end-of-life

IT leaders released an RFP to replace the county'9s two-decade-old ERP platform (SAP) and warned of a multi-year implementation, staffing needs, and a vendor-selection process that closes in early June.
Chief IS&T Officer Greg Marrow told commissioners the county is running an SAP ERP instance put into service in 2004 and that the vendor has signaled end-of-life for older versions. "The end of life of this piece of software that we're on is really 2027," Marrow said, adding that the county has procured a limited paid maintenance extension but must modernize core finance, HR and procurement systems.
The county'9s ERP RFP closes on June 3. Marrow outlined a conservative implementation timeline, noting ERP projects commonly take 36–48 months and that the county must staff project-management, business-analysis and systems-architecture roles to succeed. He and other staff flagged the malware incident from prior months as a reminder of cybersecurity and resilience priorities and said backups are now replicated to a secondary site in Charlotte.
Next steps: staff will evaluate RFP responses, run vendor demonstrations, select a software and implementation partner, and return to the board with a detailed implementation plan and resource requests. Marrow emphasized this is a cross-departmental business transformation, not only an IT initiative.
