County proposes larger DPS allocation but commissioners press for enrollment and seat-use data

Keith Lane said the $10.35 million increase in current expenses "pays for salary increases to a certain amount for employees and various things," and emphasized the county generally allows DPS to decide how to allocate the dollars.
Commissioners probed whether DPS is using all available braided funding and highlighted concerns that DPS classrooms funded for prekindergarten are under-enrolled in some cases. Durham PreK presenters later said the county is pursuing a data-sharing agreement with DPS (signed in mid-May) to compare classroom-level assessments and enrollment data; staff said that will be the first step toward tracking program outcomes and refining seat allocations.
What commissioners requested: comparative, longitudinal data showing whether Durham PreK and other early-childhood investments translate into improved readiness and fewer downstream costs; staff said they will begin compiling school-year classroom assessment data after the school year ends and present follow-ups at upcoming budget sessions.
