Caldwell County DSS advisory board keeps monthly meetings as commissioners assume governance

The Caldwell County Department of Social Services advisory board voted July 28 to continue meeting monthly after the county commissioners assumed statutory governance responsibilities.
Director Kim Barnett told the board the change shifts personnel authority — including evaluation and appointment of the DSS director — to the commissioners, but said the advisory board will continue to “review and discuss our program and community needs,” advise staff on local priorities and serve as a liaison to partners such as schools, law enforcement and mental-health providers.
Barnett described the advisory board’s role as primarily supportive and educational as the county transitions governance. "Some of the things that you all can be involved in is reviewing and discussing our program and community needs," she said, urging members to continue public outreach and program feedback.
The board reappointed the incumbent chair by motion and voice vote, then appointed Tracy as vice chair. A separate voice vote accepted a motion to keep meetings monthly during the initial transition year to maintain continuity with the commissioners’ work.
Board members said monthly meetings will help the advisory board remain informed and better relay information to the public and to county leadership. The board set its next meeting for Aug. 25 at 5:00 p.m.
