Arlington ZBA Closes Hearing on 44 Dow Avenue Porch Covering; Decision to Be Drafted

Chair Christian Klein opened the public hearing for docket 391044 and asked the applicant to present the proposal. Applicant Gordon Brummer said the project would "just kinda build a, covering on that porch, to prevent water from getting on our mail and packages, as well as preventing the sunlight from, like, heating up the door." Brummer told the board the covering would align with existing roof pitches and not extend beyond the current landing.

Board members probed technical details including a discrepancy in the application’s listed front-yard depth, the selection of brackets rather than columns, and whether the work remained within the town’s 25-square-foot exemption. After reviewing the seven findings required under section 3.33 and the specific 5.39(d) standard for porch/landing coverings, Chair Klein summarized that "the adverse effects the proposed use will not outweigh its beneficial impacts." With no public speakers on the record, the board voted by roll call to close the hearing. The board directed a member to draft a written decision in favor of approval; the decision will be presented for a formal vote at the Aug. 11 meeting.

The board’s action closes the record for 44 Dow Avenue; no additional testimony may be submitted for consideration on this application until the board reconvenes to vote on the written decision.
