Developer defends Hwy 107 gas station plan, requests correction to town resolution

Cody Lewis told the Town of Webster board June 4 that his family's planned gas station on Hwy 107 includes engineering safeguards to protect the nearby Tuckasegee River and asked that a previously adopted town resolution be rescinded or revised to correct inaccuracies.
Lewis described measures he said had been taken to prevent fuel leakage, including "a sophisticated storm water filtration system and double-walled underground storage tanks that will be strapped in place," and said he had obtained permits from environmental agencies prior to construction. He also said "none of the businesses owned and operated by his family have ever received a violation of any kind," and asked the board to either rescind or correct the existing resolution he said included inaccurate information.
Members of the public raised concerns about the construction's potential effects on waterways; Lewis answered questions from several residents and asserted he had taken precautions he said would prevent negative effects even in catastrophic events. The commission later amended the April 2 resolution to broaden its scope and passed the amended resolution unanimously at the same meeting.
The board did not take separate formal action on Lewis's request to rescind the original resolution; instead commissioners amended the town resolution to a broader statement addressing commercial developments near waterways.
