Board reviews draft historic preservation ordinance, schedules October public hearing

The board reviewed a draft Historic Preservation Ordinance with edits made by Town Attorney Will Morgan. Commissioners asked Morgan to forward the draft to Jackson County Planning and to email the board a completed PDF; Mayor Rodes said the town will hold "a public hearing at the October meeting before adoption of the countys historical ordinance."
Commissioner Brandon Core, who also serves on the Jackson County Historical Commission, said he did not think the countys intent was to allow a historic designation without the consent of the property owner, and commissioners sought clarifications to the verbiage. Commissioner Leigh Anne Young moved to approve the verbiage to amend the ordinance, Commissioner Brandon Core seconded, and the motion carried unanimously. The board indicated they will take public comment during the October hearing prior to any adoption steps.
