Republic Services calls White Oak gas yields 'exceeding expectations,' flags need to upgrade flare skid

Steve Slater, general manager for Republic Services' Western North Carolina and East Tennessee operations, told the board the landfill gas system has exceeded expectations in both flow and quality and could support a landfill gas‑to‑energy project. "It's far exceeding our expectations of what it's generating and the quality, which is good news," Slater said.
Republic Services reported they installed 21 wells and measured around 500 SCFM from wells alone in 2024, with time‑of‑clean‑out tests showing a bump of about 200 SCFM. Slater said the project is in its infancy but viable; the company will need to upgrade the flare skid sooner than anticipated to handle current flows.
Commissioners thanked the company and emphasized continued oversight through the Solid Waste Board and the county's relationship with the contractor.
