DeKalb County expands summer youth internships to 450, pays $15 an hour

DeKalb County opened its 2026 Summer Youth Employment Program, a six-week paid internship for residents ages 16 to 24 that county officials said will place participants across county departments and expose them to career pathways. This year’s program expanded to 450 interns — 100 more than last year — and pays $15 an hour.
An agency official told attendees, "Let me say that you are our future. And in DeKalb County, we're not waiting on the future. The future is happening today." Program organizers said interns were selected through a lottery and will work alongside county professionals to gain hands-on experience and practical skills.
The county identified the program partners as DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran Johnson, the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners and Worksource DeKalb. Organizers said the expansion included broadened eligibility requirements intended to give more young people the opportunity to participate.
