Maui County Cultural Resources Commission elects Kapono Kamaunu chair, Jen Mather vice chair

The County of Maui Cultural Resources Commission elected Kapono Kamaunu as chair and Jen Mather as vice chair during its regular meeting on May 7, 2026.
Commissioner Laʻakea Poepoe nominated Kamaunu for chair and Commissioner Jen Mather seconded the nomination; Kamaunu accepted and the body approved the nomination by unanimous voice vote. Commissioners Keʻeaumoku Kapu, Jen Mather, Anuhea Arakawa and Laʻakea Poepoe recorded “aye” during the roll call vote, and staff confirmed the motion carried. Later the Commission nominated and unanimously confirmed Jen Mather as vice chair.
The appointments put Kamaunu and Mather in leadership as the Commission continues oversight of rebuild and preservation work in Lahaina and other historic areas across Maui County. The votes were procedural and final at the meeting; the body will continue to address agenda items including design guideline adoption, review of development projects and policy directives at its next scheduled meeting on June 4, 2026.
