Council to consider supporting volunteer disaster airlift team after presentation from airport commissioner

A King County airport commissioner identifying himself as Jamil O'Brien presented a motion and draft resolution asking the Vashon-Maury Community Council to endorse establishment of the Vashon Island Disaster Airlift Response Team (VIDART), a volunteer organization of private pilots and ground crews to assist with light cargo, medical evacuations, damage assessment and personnel transport in a major disaster that could disrupt ferry service.
O'Brien said VIDART would coordinate with Vashon Island Fire & Rescue, the emergency operations center and CERT volunteers and described exercises and planned agreements with neighboring jurisdictions. The presenter said VIDART is not yet county-funded and would rely on local volunteer pilots and hangar owners. The council did not vote on the resolution at the Nov. 20 meeting; per procedure the matter will be placed on the Jan. 15 agenda for possible adoption. "I would like you to, please, consider this motion and the resolution," the presenter said, and council members agreed to include the resolution with the next agenda packet.
