VMCC adopts lean 2026 budget after discussion of fundraising shortfalls

The Vashon-Maury Community Council on Nov. 20 adopted its proposed 2026 operating budget after a presentation by Treasurer Anne Thorne and discussion about the group's fundraising history and reserves.
Thorne told the council the budget lists only core operational expenses—Zoom, insurance, Mailchimp and ElectionBuddy—and projects $1,100 in revenue from an online auction. She said the council's bank accounts are projected to end the year near $2,500 and that, assuming no further donations, the budgeted year-end balance would be roughly negative $96.38. "This is a very bare bones budget," Thorne said while walking members through the line items.
Several members urged renewed fundraising efforts and formation of a fundraising committee. Diane Emerson, who said she has five years on the community-council board, said past fundraisers were handled ad hoc because volunteers didn’t sustain a permanent committee. After discussion the motion to adopt the budget—moved by Anne Thorne and seconded by Doug Ostrom—was decided by hand/voice count and reported as 18 in favor, none opposed. The chair announced the motion carried.
