North‑central jail planning raised as state law changes could increase local bed demand

The commission reviewed an invitation from the North Central Regional Planning Commission to take part in a regional discussion about jail capacity and potential cooperative solutions.
Staff said the invitation aims to ‘‘make connections and determine if there was a way to collectively meet some of the needs in the region cost effectively.’’ The sheriff and commissioners raised concerns that a newly enacted state law — discussed in the meeting as taking effect July 1 — could increase jail and juvenile placements and therefore local costs for housing, transport and medical care for inmates.
Commissioners asked that the sheriff be involved in the regional discussions and signaled support for participating in the planning dialogue. Staff agreed to notify the regional body that Ottawa County is interested and to coordinate representation for the county.
