VDOT says 604 speed study upheld limits; 604 bridge slated for replacement in 2027

During public comment resident Emily Johnson asked whether a previously requested speed study for 604 had an update; VDOT confirmed several studies had been done and recommended keeping the existing speed limits while adding targeted signage and speed feedback signs at curves. The VDOT representative said traffic engineering recommended timing adjustments for the flashing yellow arrows at two 360 intersections to reduce crashes.
On the county's 604 bridge, the official said the structure "does now qualify for state of good repair funding, based on the condition index. And so we anticipate that that funding will start probably in 2027," adding that bridge maintenance will continue in the interim to keep the posted weight restriction in force until replacement design begins. The residency also described ongoing asphalt digouts, pavement marking work, and an on‑schedule Phase 1 courthouse sidewalk completion expected around Thanksgiving.
The update included both near-term operational steps (signage, temporary patches) and a longer timetable for full bridge replacement; supervisors said they appreciated the quick patching work and asked that staff continue outreach to adjacent property owners for sidewalk right-of-way discussions.
