They reported a State Historic Preservation Office determination that the Scout Hut is unlikely to be National Register eligible, which they said still permits adaptive reuse for local uses. The commission requested coordination with parks on septic availability and suggested archaeological investigation around St. Paul’s Cemetery; they offered to provide written recommendations, cost estimates and a 2025 workplan.
Councilmembers asked about funding (hotel/motel tourism funds were discussed as a possible source) and agreed it would be reasonable to earmark modest funds for the historic commission to implement prioritized tasks. The council later considered item 24‑055 during the regular meeting: the MOU language was revised per prior discussion so any items the Old Campbellton historic society could not retain would be returned to the city, and the council adopted the MOU unanimously.
The historic commission said the MOU could also facilitate philanthropic fundraising and partnerships; council asked staff to place the commission’s written recommendations on a future agenda for prioritization and possible budget consideration.
