Organizers of the Aug. 8 back-to-school event told Talk City Greensboro the program will include mobile health screenings and vision checks aimed at identifying unmet needs among children and their families. "We have Cone Health that's come with their mobile unit at times," Rena Comer said, and she listed additional partners including North Carolina A and T’s nursing program and the Hamilton Lions Club.
Comer described a recent vision-training session provided to the volunteer team that will allow the organizers to conduct vision screenings and, when necessary, offer free glasses through the program: "...he came in to do a vision training for our team that allowed us to do vision screenings and then offer free glasses to those that have a need." She said dental screenings may be possible this year through TAPA and that speech and pediatric services have participated in past events.
Comer emphasized the screenings can have broader family impact beyond a single check: screening assessments can identify high blood pressure or vision problems that families might not know about and prompt follow-up primary care. She framed the screenings as a gateway to ongoing care for some attendees, particularly among refugee or non-English-speaking families.
