The Montrose City Council voted to accept the retirement of firefighter Mike Markiten, effective September 13, 2024. A fire-department representative told the council that "Mike joined us in August 1984. He served for 40 years in 1 month," and said Markiten had been fire chief for more than 15 years during his tenure.
Council members moved to accept the retirement and the motion passed. Council members expressed appreciation for Markiten’s long service and said his experience would be missed. Staff and the fire representative noted the department will proceed with succession planning and administrative updates related to the retirement.
