Board hears plan for Pre‑AP English and AP Seminar pathways at high schools

Curriculum staff described proposed additions to the high‑school English sequence meant to expand access to AP‑level work. The plan would add Pre‑AP English 1 for 9th graders and a Pre‑AP English 2 for 10th graders who do not take AP Seminar. A presenter said the Pre‑AP classes focus on intensive paragraph writing, using compelling evidence and units in plays, poetry, nonfiction and narrative to build students’ readiness for AP writing demands.

The presenter named four teachers who discussed the courses: Amber Ashley, Doreen Barnes, Elise Greenwood and Sarah Baubkamp. Board members asked how course selection will be explained to students and whether AP Seminar remains optional; the presenter said AP Seminar is optional for sophomores and counselors will showcase pathways beginning in 8th grade. "AP Seminar... requires students to conduct high levels of research and defense of different positions," the presenter said, noting students complete college‑board assignments and a 1,200‑word paper as part of the course.

Board members thanked the teachers and asked staff to ensure counseling materials clearly present options to incoming high‑school students.
