Sheriff’s office urges bus, car-seat and firearm safety as students return to school

Captain Bruce Dixon of the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office told viewers that with school returning the community should refresh safety habits: give bus stops extra space, expect stops during commutes and review North Carolina law on how to stop for school buses with stop-arms and flashing lights. "Just review the North Carolina general statute ... and try to do your best to keep our kids safe," he said.
Dixon also emphasized vehicle and firearm safety around children: he urged caregivers to keep children properly restrained and warned about the danger of leaving children in hot cars. On firearms, Dixon said lawful ownership carries a responsibility for secure storage: "If we can keep that firearm stored safely in our house with a commercial lock or inside of a safe, we can eliminate those tragic tragedies." He highlighted the role of School Resource Officers, saying the sheriff’s office has "30 plus of them" assigned across county schools to build relationships with students and receive reports of suspicious behavior.
