Piedmont seeks volunteers, aims for ADA upgrade in Linda Beach tot‑lot replacement

City staff updated the commission on the Linda Beach tot‑lot replacement project and requested one volunteer each from the park commission and the recreation commission to help review supplier proposals and help design a community input workshop. Staff said the goal is to advance bid documents this winter and begin construction so work occurs in summer FY24–25.
“We are tied to commission meeting dates,” Shelley said, and staff outlined a schedule of community input in October followed by solicitation of bids in winter and anticipated construction in early summer. Shelley also said the department had evaluated an ADA ramp and now has “a better understanding of what will be involved for that, which is not as large as we thought, but still needs some work.”
Staff described the technical requirements: surfacing that meets ASTM fall‑height and ADA guidance, equipment targeted for 0–5 year olds, and a layout approach that organizes play into zones (swing, spin, climbing, tactile/quiet) optimized for roughly 3,100 square feet. Suppliers were asked to provide two design options with equipment located within the site to account for safety clearances. The city will make community input available in English and Spanish and provide an online comment option for residents who cannot attend an in‑person session.
On shading, staff said there is currently no funding to add a dedicated shade structure; commissioners and residents discussed private fundraising as an option and the potential to incorporate shading into equipment design or enhance tree canopy. The commission will identify volunteers to serve briefly on the review subcommittee and return to the commission with recommendations after the vendor proposals arrive.
