Shelley Foreman, community relations regional director for Via Health and a Haywood County resident, presented a proclamation asking the board to recognize September as National Recovery Month and to support local recovery services and providers.
"With treatment and support, substance use disorders can be overcome, and healing is possible," Foreman said while reading the proclamation, which notes more than 1.2 million people in North Carolina are affected by substance use disorders and encourages awareness of treatment and recovery supports.
Commissioners and audience members shared local success stories of workers who recovered and returned to steady employment, and several commissioners noted concerns about continued reductions in state and federal funding for behavioral health. Foreman said she would return with further updates on federal and General Assembly actions as they become known.
