Board directs staff to request Route 45 South speed study from VDOT
Summary
Following a planning commission recommendation, the board approved a motion to request a VDOT speed study on a stretch of Route 45 South (from 631 Davenport to its intersection with Anderson Highway) to consider lowering the posted limit from 55 to 45 mph.
At the board meeting on May 12, the Planning Commission's April 20 motion to request a traffic-speed study on a segment of Route 45 South was presented to the board. Planning staff said the commission noted existing and future development (two community centers, a church, 23 homes, businesses and a new mini-golf) and asked the board to request VDOT evaluate whether the posted limit should be reduced.
Planning director (speaker 7) summarized the commission's action: "the commission directed staff to request a speed study for this section of Route 45 South... with the intention of reducing the speed limit from 55 miles per hour." The board moved, seconded and voted to approve requesting the study.
The vote directs staff to ask VDOT to perform a traffic study; any change to the posted speed would be set by VDOT after its evaluation.
