The Cumberland County Board of Supervisors discussed a proposed resolution reaffirming support for Second Amendment rights at its May 12 meeting and ultimately deferred action.
The resolution, introduced by a board member, restated support for the Second Amendment and referenced Article I, Section 13 of the Virginia Constitution and the U.S. Supreme Court's New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen decision. A board member proposed a substitute motion to reaffirm the county's December 2019 resolution in lieu of the newly drafted language.
During debate, a board member argued for the importance of the amendment to local culture, saying, "the 2nd amendment is uniquely American," and described firearms training within families. Others urged delaying a vote so that any revised language could be circulated and reviewed. One board member said it would be better to revisit the resolution after staff prepared an updated order and suggested not passing it that night.
The board did not adopt the new resolution at the meeting; members agreed to table the item for further review and to revisit it at a later date.
