Facility and Maintenance Director Tim Sisk told the board the Waynesville Branch will undergo a full roof and HVAC replacement that requires an initial hard closure beginning Nov. 24.
"November 24 is our date for a hard closure for the entire facility," Sisk said, and staff estimate 60 to 80 days of construction work that will include replacing boilers, pumps, plumbing and roof drainage. He said contractors are already working on mechanical systems in the boiler room and crews will need upstairs access that can only be done during a full closure.
Library Director Kathy Wassler described service plans to reduce disruption: staff will continue phone service and redirect holds to branches; the Canton, Maggie Valley and Fines Creek branches and two locker locations will support holds and returns; the county plans to reopen the Waynesville circle drive for curbside pickup after the initial shutdown.
Sisk said book collections will be protected in place by building a plastic corridor through ceiling work areas and by maintaining limited air handling, and staff may relocate some duties temporarily to other branches for inventory and collection management. Commissioners thanked staff and described the project as long overdue but foundational to the building's future operations.
