La Marque staff presented a draft fiscal-year 2027 events calendar and a strategy to use sponsorships and limited hotel-occupancy (hot) tax support to bring back larger events. Staff said many proposed events are contingent on outside funding and that the city plans to use professional event producers through RFPs (near-term events) and RFIs (concepts and later-season events).
"These are all contingent on there being funding," staff said, explaining hot tax may be used for events that demonstrably bring overnight visitors. Staff cited last year’s BUYU Fest as an example of an event that qualified for hot-tax support because attendees came from outside the area and stayed overnight. Councilmembers discussed forming a sponsorship packet, pursuing partner organizations (e.g., Chamber, HGAC connections) and possibly establishing a nonprofit vehicle (501(c)(3)) to facilitate fundraising and sponsorship write-offs. The council authorized issuance of the RFI/RFP materials and approved the draft calendar by voice vote.
