Resident tells Vernon County finance panel landfill projections are "off base"

KJ Jacobson, speaking online during the public-comment period, told the Vernon County Finance Committee that a slide shown at a recent board meeting projecting 342,000 tons over 15 years was "very off base" and not supported by the county’s historical tonnage. "You have never ever received that much tonnage," Jacobson said, adding that the figure implies about 22,800 tons per year and that the county had only approached that level once previously when out-of-county waste was allowed.
Jacobson also raised accounting concerns, alleging errors in how the 2023 audit and 2024 reporting handled income and a roughly $400,000 insurance recovery. "I found, what I think is a fudge from the treasury department," she said, and urged the committee to involve the new finance director in landfill finances and to improve internal controls. Chair (speaker 1) thanked Jacobson and invited her to submit written follow-up comments and to contact the finance director directly.
