DRB approves Shell canopy and LED pricing at 875 Island Ave.; board restricts canopy lighting

The board reviewed a Shell station rebranding and signage package for 875 Island Avenue. Kevin, the applicant presenter, said the proposal would reface the canopy in Shell’s red and yellow bands, replace the freestanding price pylon panels (same overall square footage) and convert manual pricing to LED displays; small Shell pecten logos (about 5.6 sq ft) would appear on each side of the canopy.

Board members focused on intensity of illumination and the canopy’s ring light. Steve and Haril questioned whether the new accent lighting would create an overly bright presence near the nearby residential edge. Kevin explained the LED fascia brightness is variable (a numeric scale of 3–10) and that the displays dim at night; he said station hours (roughly 6 a.m. to about 10–11 p.m.) would limit when the displays would operate. After discussion the board voted to approve the canopy design on the condition that no additional accent lighting be installed; the pylon sign with LED pricing panels and fuel-rewards messaging was also approved in a separate motion. All recorded roll-call votes on these items were affirmative.

The chair noted prior special permits for signage at the site and reminded the board and applicant to ensure the new panels meet bylaw sightline and spacing requirements. The board directed staff to document approvals and to follow up if applicants propose illumination at a later time.
