Board approves Chapters on Chestnut facade and signage at 7 Chestnut St.; tagline to be finalized later

Nicole Connolly, who identified herself as a long-time Needham resident and the incoming owner of Chapters on Chestnut, presented a facade-renovation plan for 7 Chestnut Street that aims to restore historic detail and add a bookstore and cafe. "If I had to use one word to describe the mission of Chapters on Chestnut, it would be connection," Connolly said, describing the project as a civic and commercial contribution to Needham Center.

Architect Monica (introduced as Monica Polly) explained the design intent to emphasize pilasters and an ornate parapet while adding navy wood panels, brass hardware and gold lettering limited to no larger than 8.5 inches. Builder Micah (Consigli Construction) noted the team’s intent to use durable, high-quality materials. Board members praised the design and suggested options to improve continuity around the corner — such as running the blue paneling further down, adding lit brick, or installing framed posters or a mural on the side wall — and asked the applicant to return with mockups of alternatives.

The board voted to approve the facade renovation and the sign/address as submitted, and separately approved the concept of a tagline with the final wording and lettering to be reviewed later. The approvals were unanimous on roll-call votes. The board requested that if substantial design changes are made (for example, to the paneling on the side wall), the applicant return for additional review.
