STEPS seeks level funding and $25,000 one-time support for homeless housing and shelter services

Shawn Roszier presented STEPS’ request for level funding of $15,012 to match federal and state grants supporting Early Head Start and Head Start, homeless services, domestic-violence shelter operations (Madeline’s House) and a new 24/7 sexual-assault recovery program. Roszier said STEPS provided services to 166 individuals and 96 households through Madeline’s House and operates a 24/7 hotline and court advocacy, and that the agency recently secured a HUD grant to assist housing transitions out of shelters.
Roszier also requested a one-time $25,000 allocation to support interim homeless housing—STEPS is using local hotels now—and to advance construction of a micro-home village and community center planned for a donated 51-acre site in Farmville. The Board did not act on the request at the work session and will consider funding during budget deliberations.
