Amelia Food Pantry reports rising need, seeks increased local support

Joi Worsham, director of the Amelia County Food Pantry, described operations, partnerships and client needs during the work session. Worsham said the pantry partners with FeedMore and operates with more than 30 volunteers; she reported survey-style statistics included in the presentation: 52% of parents with school-aged children have reported debt due to rising food costs, and 60% of adults struggle to choose between nutritious food and other essentials. The pantry also provides pet food to meet household needs.
Worsham said the pantry has applied for a $12,000 grant through the Bishop Storehouse (Church of Latter-Day Saints) to purchase items from the storehouse and that the hosting church currently helps with utilities. Supervisor Joseph Easter expressed support for increasing the county’s prior $7,500 annual donation, saying local dollars stay in Amelia and provide high value to residents served. The Board did not take immediate formal action on the pantry request at the work session.
