During the work session, several council members raised concerns about the sustainability of Alpine paying 100% of employee medical and dental premiums. One councilor said peer research for the Lone Peak Public Safety District found only two out of 10 surveyed entities provided 100% coverage, and others typically cover 90–95% or less.
Members asked staff to model how different coverage levels would affect the budget and how higher medical costs could reduce available dollars for raises. "The relevancy of the benefits of health care is that it's outpacing inflation," one councilor said, urging the group to consider whether the city should continue its current level of coverage or rebalance benefits and salary increases. Staff acknowledged medical costs are a major driver of the total compensation figure and agreed to return with more detailed projections.
