Monroe County approves institutional-use designation for Bridal Grove after public support

The Board of County Commissioners voted to amend the comprehensive plan to designate Bridal Grove (Big Pine Key/No Name Key) as an institutional use after a public speaker and commissioners praised years of cleanup and redevelopment work.
The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners on Dec. 10 approved an ordinance amending the county comprehensive plan to designate the property commonly called Bridal Grove as an existing institutional use.
Patrick Garvey, who addressed the commissioners during the public hearing, thanked county staff and the commission for working with the project team. “I just wanted to thank the board of county commissioners and the staff of Monroe County, the planning department, and the county attorneys for, you know, working with us to make Grama Grove a resource for the community,” Garvey said. Commissioners described the site as a community asset and moved the item forward without opposition.
The change will be reflected in table 2.7 and figure 2.5 of the county’s comprehensive plan for Big Pine Key and No Name Key as requested by the BOCC on Oct. 16, 2024. Staff reported no registered public opposition either in person or online aside from supportive testimony. The ordinance was carried by motion during the hearing; the commission closed the item and proceeded to subsequent public hearings.
