The board held a second public hearing and approved text amendments to bring county zoning into compliance with Iowa Senate File 592 (signed 05/01/2025), which requires counties to allow at least one accessory dwelling unit (ADU) on lots with single-family residences.
Daniel Priestley explained the ordinance changes: ADUs will be permitted via a straight building permit in qualifying zones if they meet size limits (1,000 square feet or 50% of the primary dwelling). Priestley said the change removes previous conditional-use requirements for certain relative- or worker-related secondary dwellings and aligns the county with the state mandate.
No public comment was offered on this item. The board closed the hearing and approved the second reading unanimously 4-0.
