Thornton Township Assessor Cassandra Elston told viewers that this is a reassessment year and that reassessments, which use sales activity over three years, can reset values. "Reassessments take place every three years, and that's when the values kind of increase," she said, and she warned that "the reassessment wipes out everything that they did for that decrease" from prior appeals, so taxpayers should refile.
Elston described the county process: homeowners will receive a Cook County Assessor notice showing the assessor's proposed value and "you'll have a 30 day window in which to file an appeal," after which appeals can proceed to the Cook County Board of Review. She encouraged residents who previously won reductions to file again this reassessment year and explained the township is accepting pre-filings to collect documents early.
