Ira Select Board reviews highway plans: salt, mowing, grader fuel cap and contract needs

The Select Board spent a substantial portion of the meeting on highway business and summer road tasks. Board members recorded that there was no need to order salt early, but that complaints had been received about the coarseness of the material being applied; adding more fines (a 2:1 ratio was discussed) and applying material more thickly were options mentioned.
Operational needs included acquiring a fuel cap for the grader and purchasing a 100-foot extension cord and hoses. Alden Hewitt was added as an approved purchaser at LaValley’s. The town garage was described as too damp, causing brakes to lock on a truck; the board purchased a dehumidifier that still needs to be installed. The board also noted John Farrell cannot do roadside mowing this summer and agreed to contact West Rutland to see if they can provide mowing services. Hydroseeding of the bank on Cross Roads and ditch blowout and stone fill work were identified as tasks that will likely require hired help rather than town employees.
Bobbi Raiche is assigned to contact the Rutland County Sheriff’s Department regarding the sheriff contract; the board signaled a need to obtain rate quotes for mowing, snowplowing, and shoveling as part of FY2026 contracting work.
