Gunther explained the procedural steps that lead from the current draft to formal public hearings and eventual council consideration. "When they give me that signal, I upload it to the Department of Land Conservation and Development's post acknowledgement planned amendment site. They have 35 days to review it," she said. After that upload the planning commission may set a first hearing date at least 35 days later.
She emphasized that the planning commission can hold as many public hearings and as much deliberation as necessary during the hearing phase; work sessions are limited because the commission cannot make motions and votes there. "If we do get to it... those guys go back and forth for hours, and they can continue this and set a date for the next public hearing," she said, noting there is no hard cap on hearing time.
