September sales tax down sharply; year‑to‑date still positive, finance director says

Director of Finance Darryl Tuttle presented September sales tax results to the legislature, reporting total county collections of about $7,000,000 and characterizing the month as a reconciliation period that included an audit adjustment shifting roughly $1.1 million to another jurisdiction.
Tuttle said the September total represented a 14.49% decrease from the same month last year, with the city of Ithaca's share down about 32.3% compared with last September. He also noted that January–September year‑to‑date county sales tax collections still showed an increase of 4.04% compared with the prior year and cautioned that one monthly figure does not by itself define a trend. "For the month of September, total collected sales tax in Tompkins County was about $7,000,000," he said, and explained that state reconciliation processes and an audit contributed to the apparent dip. The director said staff will present a quarterly briefing to the Budget, Capital and Personnel committee and continue monitoring recurring quarterly reconciliation adjustments.
