Local students urge Sacramento to boost visibility of youth job programs

Sporty Oranges, a team of Semester at City Hall participants, told the Sacramento City Council that the city’s youth employment programs are underused because young people don’t know they exist. "Teens want jobs, but most don't know where to start," the group said, citing a survey of 76 respondents in which 78 reported difficulty finding job opportunities and 73 percent said they would pay attention if the city posted positions on social media.
The students proposed short videos and reels, clearer navigation on city web pages, physical flyers in schools and community centers, and making the youth resource and employment fair a biannual event rather than once a year. Council members praised the presentation and asked staff to share website links and promotional materials when they publish the students’ mockups. Council member Guerra suggested linking the students’ work with the Sacramento Employment Training Agency for resume workshops, and Council member Kaplan offered to help post materials to council webpages once the social pages go live.
