Marathon Airport officials outline $37–40M in recent capital works and promise next briefing on commercial service

Richard Strickland, Director of Airports, told the commissioners the county has invested tens of millions in Marathon International Airport projects over recent years, with the runway being the single largest capital item.
"Of those capital investment projects pictured here, obviously the runway was the single largest project that was done," Strickland said, summarizing the work. He reported roughly $30 million for the runway, about $2.2 million for the terminal roof (FDOT grant-funded), $1 million for impact doors and windows, and a recently commissioned fuel farm that provides two 30,000-gallon Jet A tanks. He said partners such as FedEx contributed roughly $1 million in facility investments and that roughly 95% of the $37–40 million total was funded by grants or partner funding.
Commissioner Rice pressed on timelines and prerequisites for commercial service. Strickland said staff and an air-service consultant will present a detailed plan at an upcoming meeting; he told commissioners he expects commercial service is attainable but dependent on several factors and additional work with carriers and the FAA.
Next steps: staff will provide a full air-service briefing at a future board meeting; commissioners will be invited to receive individual briefings before that public presentation.
