Council lowers Centennial Road speed limit to 45 mph after traffic study

Council voted to lower the posted speed limit on part of Centennial Road to 45 miles per hour following a speed study and intergovernmental coordination.
Public Service representative Barnes said the study, conducted with the Lucas County engineer’s office and in compliance with ODOT standards, found an 85th‑percentile speed of 46 mph and that “there were approximately 7,300 cars a day” in the study corridor. Because the roadway crosses jurisdictions — city on one side and county on the other — the city sought and received a letter of support from Lucas County to avoid mixed limits that complicate enforcement. “We dropped that down to 45,” Barnes said when describing the city’s recommendation.
Council introduced and adopted Ordinance 15‑2026 to amend the Sylvania codified ordinances (maximum speed limits). Members said the change is part of broader calming measures and concurrent roundabout planning in the corridor; the ordinance passed by voice vote as an emergency measure.
