County to accept $334,200 DCR grant, partner with Mount Rogers Planning District for flood preparedness plan

Smyth County staff told supervisors the county was awarded $334,200 from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) to develop a community flood preparedness plan. Staff recommended executing a memorandum of understanding with the Mount Rogers Planning District Commission to administer the project because the commission has capacity and prior experience running similar regional efforts (speaker 4).
Questions from supervisors focused on whether the plan would outline specific preparedness actions; staff said the MOU-funded work will include engineering analysis to determine flood elevations and mapping and that the results should be incorporated into the county's comprehensive plan. A motion to authorize execution of the MOU and accept the grant funds was moved, seconded and approved by unanimous voice vote.
