Carneys Point narrows budget to meet $58,000 appropriation cap

C. Ehret, the township chief municipal finance officer, told the Carneys Point Township Committee on Feb. 15 that the draft budget must be reduced to bring appropriations under the township's Appropriation CAP, estimating the needed reduction at about $58,000.
"We still have to get under the Appropriation CAP which is about $58,000," Ehret said, prompting department-by-department reviews and several holdbacks on capital and staffing requests.
The Committee heard requests from departments including Police, Public Works and Recreation and directed staff to prioritize required or state-mandated projects while deferring discretionary spending. Mayor Brown and other members emphasized timing and the need to revisit some capital projects in later budget sessions.
The Committee approved adjustments that include funding one police hire instead of two and placing $50,000 in capital to cover potential grant-related matching or additional costs. No public comments were offered during the public-participation period, and the meeting adjourned at noon.
