Kara Doner, community relations director at Vaya Health, presented the organization's quarterly update to the Stokes County Board of Commissioners, describing Vaya’s coverage of behavioral and physical health services across its catchment. Doner said Vaya manages Medicaid in 32 counties and highlighted rural-health initiatives, peer-support programs and telehealth services introduced during the COVID era.
On the innovations waiver, Doner told the board Vaya currently serves 66 members in Stokes County and that 53 people are on a waiting list. She acknowledged long waits and said Vaya is adding family partners and other navigation supports to help families through appeals and documentation. Commissioners pressed for clearer notice when Vaya representatives will be on site and asked staff to coordinate additional outreach to ensure families know how to appeal and where to get help. Doner committed to follow up directly with families who provided contact information and to return with additional staff at a future quarterly presentation.
