Harbor master reports weather delays, cruise postponement and harbor cleanup plans

Kevin Schmidt, Harbor Master, told council that recent south-southeast winds and residual swell delayed a ship's disembarkation; tenders attempted approaches and the vessel deferred disembarkation today and is scheduled to return Friday. He said the harbor experienced weather impacts but came through 'pretty unscathed.'
Schmidt previewed the 44th annual harbor cleanup, organized by local groups and benefiting the USC hyperbaric chamber, Avalon Rotary Foundation and Avalon Beautiful; he said the event could draw as many as 600 divers and volunteers depending on weather. He also shared port activity figures since the last meeting—201 arrivals for a total of 1,296 overnight stays—slightly above last year at this time and summarized recent enforcement and public-assist activity.
Council members asked about an electric harbor boat; Schmidt said it works well but currently needs maintenance on the lower outdrive and bow tube and staff are arranging service. He asked for patience as mechanics complete scheduled maintenance and said additional tenders and patrols help cover harbor activities.
