The council authorized five fire officers to attend the Minnesota Fire Chiefs Conference in Duluth on Oct. 14–17, 2026, and also approved limited overspending of the travel budget to cover increased hotel costs.
Fire department staff described the conference as an important training and networking opportunity. The department said the travel budget was set at $7,500 but recent hotel pricing changes required authorization to exceed that line item and to cover overages from other budget lines. Council members voted to authorize attendance and to allow the necessary overspending; both motions passed 5-0.
Council and staff discussed cost drivers and future scheduling of the conference on weekends to reduce cost pressures.
