"Dr. Damisch clarified that this presentation was virtual, pre-recorded, and attendance at the parent night was entirely voluntary," he said, addressing concerns raised by members of the public who signed in to comment. Board members and parents had raised questions after social-media posts suggested the speaker would appear in person and present to students.
Board member Suzie Hester said she was concerned about how students would be addressed but later said she was satisfied with the presentation format for staff. Andrea DeSerto told the board she had read the book at the center of the conversation and that it had helped her own children, according to board remarks during the meeting.
The board did not take formal disciplinary action or schedule additional programs on the topic during the meeting; Dr. Damisch said the staff presentation for a teacher in-service had been "overwhelmingly well received by staff."
