SCE gives annual propane safety briefing for Catalina Island

A Southern California Edison representative, Tracy Degnan (S16), delivered the annual gas-safety presentation for Catalina Island, covering the propane-air distribution system, routine patrols, corrosion protections and customer responsibilities.
“Because most of our gas pipeline is underground, it's very important that you call Dig Alert prior to conducting any digging activities... call 811 full working days before beginning to excavate,” SCE's Tracy Degnan (S16) said, adding that customers are responsible for piping from the meter to a residence and should inspect appliances and piping for corrosion. Degnan described mercaptan odorants used to help detect leaks and advised immediate evacuation and calling 911 and SCE's Catalina-specific emergency number if a leak is suspected.
SCE provided a Catalina-specific phone number for pipeline concerns and asked residents to keep pipeline routes clear of structures and plantings. She also advised that excavation should proceed with hand tools once a pipeline location has been identified by the utility.
