Board adopts new rules for student clubs after debate over outside adult involvement

The revised regulation allows student-requested clubs during lunch but restricts non-school adults from directing, conducting or regularly attending those activities (defined as more than two meetings in a school year). One trustee said the policy, as written, could be seen as targeting a lunchtime Bible club and voted against adoption. Other trustees said the intent is to ensure that instructional time be protected and that student-led clubs be student-directed; they noted facility agreements remain an option for after-school programs.
The motion to adopt the policy passed on a 4-1 vote. Board members said staff and legal counsel worked to balance student leadership opportunities with parent notification and campus supervision requirements.
