Pelham board grants tenure to 15 educators after recognition ceremony

The Pelham Union Free School District Board of Education celebrated 15 educators Tuesday evening and then voted to approve their tenure appointments.
Board President (speaker 1) opened the event and said, “To each of tonight's tenure recipients, congratulations. We are proud of you, grateful for your work, and happy to celebrate this wonderful occasion.” The superintendent and principals introduced each honoree in a ceremonial program that ranged from classroom teachers to building administrators.
Deputy human resources leader Dr. Fitzgerald and school principals highlighted individual accomplishments: Prospect Hill principal Dr. Carr described Samantha Battaglia as someone who “brings intention, reflection, and heart into everything she does,” citing her instructional leadership and parent engagement work. Pelham Memorial High School principal Mr. Llewellyn and other building leaders praised new tenured teachers for contributions in special education, English, social studies, music and student support services.
After the recognition program, the board took action on Schedule A, the packet item to formalize the tenure appointments. The chair moved the item, it was seconded, and the board voted in favor; the motion carried and the 15 recommended staff were granted tenure.
Why this matters: Granting tenure confers long-term employment protections and signals the district's formal affirmation of educators' performance. Administrators said the district will continue to support professional growth and instructional excellence.
What’s next: The newly tenured staff received a group photo and the district said follow-up personnel paperwork will be completed by the business office so contracts and records reflect the change.
