Teacher urges staff input as board weighs AI policy options

District administrators presented Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA) policy #625, Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence, and outlined two paths: establish a local school-based committee to set AI parameters, or adopt guidance from a regional committee such as the North West Service Coop. The board received the presentation as part of board discussion on March 9.
Teacher Steven Ware asked that faculty be included in the policy-setting process, saying faculty observe both productive and dishonest uses of AI in the classroom. In the minutes, the teacher “asked that faculty members be part of the discussion as the policy is being set as they see everyday how students are using AI in a constructive way as well as a dishonest way that does not help their learning.” The board did not take a formal vote on which option to pursue at the meeting.
